In 2008 St. Mullins, representing County Carlow, were runners up in our population category in the Co-operation Ireland Pride of Place Competition. This was an All-Ireland Competition that acknowledges the work that communities are doing to improve the quality of life in their area. This was a huge undertaking involving every organisation, school, club and business in the parish.
A lot of work went into having St. Mullins looking its best for the day of judging which took place on July 15th. Every aspect of community life, every organisation and sports club was showcased for the judges who were chauffeured in a Rolls Royce from the welcome in the GAA Clubhouse en route to view the educational exhibitions Drummond School and businesses and organisations displays in Drummond Hall.
They continued to the Heritage Centre and the graveyard where an interactive tour of the historic burial ground was performed by actors providing a few surprises and moments of hilarity. Following “Art, King of Leinster” on horseback, the judges arrived on the Quay for a short boat trip on the river Barrow. A presentation of publications, Duiske Glass and local produce was made to each of the Judges. The grand finale was a community party on the Quay with music and dancing and locally made refreshments.
